Something that's safe to eat. If you can put it in your mouth and swallow it without getting sick (or worse), it's edible.
Examples
These berries look delicious, but are they edible?
The menu said 'edible flowers' which I thought was pretty fancy.
That mushroom is definitely not edible; don't even think about it.
